15. Building a Sustainable Program
A chemical inventory program survives staff turnover only if it’s built as a system rather than tribal knowledge held by one teacher. Durable programs typically include:
A clearly assigned owner at both the site level and the district level
A digital inventory system that survives staff transitions
A written, dated review cycle
A documented onboarding process for new science staff
A relationship with a licensed hazardous waste contractor established before an emergency
A budget line for both routine disposal and periodic larger cleanouts
Districts that manage chemical inventory this way tend to spend less over time. Smaller, more frequent disposal events are consistently cheaper and safer than the periodic “we just discovered a twenty-year-old storeroom” cleanout many programs eventually face.
